FAQ - Constant Pressure Water Systems
Besides 'city-like' water pressure and supply are there other advantages to installing a variable speed pump?
Yes! Variable speed pumps use motors that start slowly and ramp up to operating speed in a process called 'soft start'. The 'soft start' helps the motor to last longer than a conventional constant speed motor. A 'constant pressure' water system using a variable speed pump also uses a much smaller storage tank (pressure tank) than a conventional water system ensuring a fresh supply of water and using less space in the installation.
What advantages do variable speed pumps have compared to constant speed pumps in conventional private water well systems?
Variable speed drive pumps operate in a range of 3 to 6 PSI; essentially "constant pressure", while conventional systems operate in a 20 PSI range (the normal differential range set on the tank pressure switch). Homeowners will enjoy a more 'city-like' water supply with a variable speed pump as the water system will deliver high pressure at different volumes just like a municipal water system.
What makes the Grundfos SQE different from the other variable speed pumps on the market?
The SQE uses the Grundfos - "Smart Motor". Like the SQ model, we still use the high efficiency permanent magnet motor, but add some electronics so the SQE motor can be controlled by the CU301 SmartFlo Kit.
The SmartFlo Kit allows you to troubleshoot the pump and adjust the discharge pressure to a pre-set constant level. SQE pumps are 2 wire and come in 5, 10, 15, and 22GPM models - 1/3HP through 1-1/2HP. We stock the most popular sizes in the 10, 15, and 22GPM series. The wiring is easy, as the power conversion occurs in the motor, in the well, NOT above ground.
What variable speed pumps for constant pressure water systems do you sell?
We stock and sell to professional water system contractors several different brands and models of variable speed constant pressure pumps. They include the Grundfos SQE, Goulds and Red Jacket 'S' Drive and Balanced Flow, and the Pentek Intellidrive. Please contact us for sizing assistance to match the best system for your application.
