FAQ - Water Treatment Systems

Can I use a water softener for iron removal?

The AquaSoft Pro series of water softeners are able to remove up to 3ppm of clear iron content. They will not however eliminate or treat an iron bacteria problem. If you use a water softener to reduce iron it is recommended that you set the unit to regenerate every 2 to 3 days.

How do I eliminate iron bacteria from my well?

Total elimination of iron bacteria is a worthy goal but often impossible. However, the usual method for controlling an iron bacteria problem is shock chlorination. In particularly severe cases we recommend a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources approved chemical pre-treatment product called Bio-Purge BD2000. This product is mixed with water and surged into the well later followed by chlorination. This process is very effective in controlling iron bacteria.

My water softener stopped softening my water. What's wrong?

Hardness in water is caused by excessive minerals in the water. These minerals are removed by a water softener's resin which attracts the hard water causing minerals in a process called ion exchange. The resin has a limited capacity of attraction and removal and after a period of time has to be recharged. A brine(salt) solution is used to recharge the resin. The mechanical parts involved in the recharge process include the brine 'pick-up' assembly, tubing, injector and the control valve. The first steps in troubleshooting are to make sure you have an adequate supply of salt and the salt dial and capacity settings are set correctly. Brining (brine draw) malfunctions are usually caused by air leaks, no salt, improper settings of capacity or the salt dial or a plugged injector. In most cases checking the above components and taking the appropriate corrective action will put the softener back in service.
